I’ve met several investors who have 401K’s from an old employer (not currently employed with them anymore) or a traditional or Roth IRA with thousands of dollars just sitting stagnant in mutual funds and other financial instruments that provide truly lackluster performance. What is a Self-Directed IRA?
A self-directed IRA is just that – an IRA vehicle that allows you to direct the investments made in your retirement account. Some broker dealers (think Fidelity, Charles Shwab) offer “self-directed” IRA platforms, but you can only invest in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. A truly self-directed IRA allows you to purchase tax liens, properties, notes, and more!
How do I get one?
There are two companies I recommend and which one you should choose depends on how much you have available in your IRA/401K to roll into your new self-directed IRA.
If you have more than $25K
Go with Guidant Financial. They have a pretty high setup fee ($3,000 to $5,000) but very low annual fees and their program is revolutionary. They form an IRA-owned LLC or corporation for which you act as director, giving you checkbook control over your IRA funds!

If you have less than $25K
Go with Equity Trust Company. Equity Trust (formerly Mid-Ohio Securities) offers a variety of programs and one of them is tailored for real estate investors. They are a low cost provider and therefore will be a little bit cumbersome when you want to make an investment. They offer great flexibility and if you have less than $25k in your IRA/401K that you’re going to roll over, they’re a great option to help you really grow your account.
